Blender. Free open-source 3D application. I'm not tops with 2D (as you saw, Sig ), so I go 3D as it has the easiest workflow for my mind.
The normal site's in my sig, but someone hacked the server. You could try torrents from [link] if you're interested.

I may be the only one that voted for Photoshop, but does not have it on their desktop computer! I chosen that because everyone else is using it, and I have just started learning to do stuff on it again.
The one I use at home is Paint.
MSPaint, beetches! It's simple, yet fun. I also use PaintBBS cause of those watercolors, tones and junk. I use PSP as well, but not often. Photoshop... I only use it to make backgrounds, really.
...don't look at me, that way! Most of my digital art is done on MSPaint. o.O
My primary tool would be Inkscape, it's definitely what I use the most. I'm a big vector person, and am happy I can get my tool for free (and I'm even doing some programming for it now too).
On my "secondary" too list, I use GIMP for raster stuff or photo editing. I use ArtRage for my natural media stuff. I use Blender for my 3D. I use Apophysis for my fractal flame stuff.
And on my "occasional" use list, I use ChaosPro for my regular fractal stuff. I use Terragen for any terrain or scenery.
A few are open source, a few are freeware... either way they're all legit free and and that in itself makes these tools more appealing to me.

..and even though I've got all these (and do love them), I want Painter.
